BA STUDY PROGRAM IN ART & TECHNOLOGY, 2019

1: Preface

Pursuant to consolidation Act 172 of February 27, 2018 on Universities (the University Act) with subsequent changes, the following curriculum is established. The programme also follows the Examination Policies and Procedures for The Faculty.

2: Basis in Ministerial orders

The Bachelor’s programme is organised in accordance with the Ministry of Higher Education and Science’s Order no. 1328 of November 15, 2016 on Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes at Universities (the Ministerial Order of the Study Programmes) with subsequent changes and Ministerial Order no. 1062 of June 30, 2016 on University Examinations (the Examination Order) with subsequent changes. Further reference is made to Ministerial Order no. 107 of February 12, 2018 (the Admission Order) and Ministerial Order no. 114 of February 3, 2015 (the Grading Scale Order).

Students admitted through the coordinated enrolment procedure, are admitted on the basis of completed secondary school exam including:

  • Danish A
  • English B
  • Mathematics B
  • History B or History of Ideas B or Contemporary History B
  • One foreign language A or B (depending on the numbers of years studying the language) or Communication and IT A.

8: The programme title in Danish and English

The Bachelor’s programme entitles the graduate to the designation Bachelor (BA) i kunst og teknologi. The English designation is: Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art and Technology.

9: Programme specifications in ECTS credits

The Bachelor’s programme is a 3-year, research-based, full-time study programme. The programme is set to 180 ECTS credits.

10: Rules concerning credit transfer (merit), including the possibility for choice of modules that are part of another programme at a university in Denmark or abroad

The Study Board can approve that passed programme elements from other educational programmes at the same level replaces programme elements within this programme (credit transfer).

Furthermore, the Study Board can, upon application, approve that parts of this programme is completed at another university or a further education institution in Denmark or abroad (pre-approval of credit transfer).

The Study Board’s decisions regarding credit transfer are based on an academic assessment.

13: Rules concerning written work, including the Bachelor’s project

In the assessment of all written work, regardless of the language it is written in, weight is also given to the student's formulation and spelling ability, in addition to the academic content. Orthographic and grammatical correctness as well as stylistic proficiency are taken as a basis for the evaluation of language performance. Language performance must always be included as an independent dimension of the total evaluation. However, no examination can be assessed as ‘Pass’ on the basis of good language performance alone; similarly, an examination normally cannot be assessed as ‘Fail’ on the basis of poor language performance alone.

The Study Board can grant exemption from this in special cases (e.g., dyslexia or a native language other than Danish).

The Bachelor’s project must include an English summary. If the project is written in English, the summary can be in Danish. The summary is included in the evaluation of the project as a whole.

14: Requirements regarding the reading of texts in a foreign language

It is assumed that the student can read academic texts in his or her native language as well as in English and use reference works etc. in other European languages.

The following competence profile will appear on the diploma:

A graduate of the Bachelor's programme has competencies acquired through an educational programme that has taken place in a research environment.

A graduate of the Bachelor's programme has fundamental knowledge of and insight into his/her subject's methods and scientific foundation. These properties qualify the graduate of the Bachelor’s programme for further education in a relevant Master’s programme as well as for employment on the basis of the educational programme

16: Competence profile of the programme

The BA program in Art & Technology is a research-based full-time study program aimed at providing students with a relevant background for carrying out professional functions and at qualifying students for admission to an MA program.

The general objective of the BA program in Art & Technology is for students to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies required in order to work independently within the subject areas at a level, which meets international standards.

Knowledge

Within the field of art and technology, and on completion of the BA program, students should have knowledge, understanding and reflection about:

  • technologies and materials important for the field of art and technology
  • artistic-experimental, academic and technological methods and practices
  • theories on perception and cognition
  • theories on interactive spaces, interactive dramaturgies and multimodal technologies
  • problem-based learning
  • art history, art theory, and aesthetic theories
  • various quantitative and qualitative methods in relation to the analysis and understanding of users, places and their applications in research and evaluation
  • theories and methods that relate to the contexts of art and technology projects, such as the creative industries, art institutions, events or similar.

Skills

Within the field of art and technology, and on the completion of the BA program, students should have skills in:

  • identifying, formulating, analyzing, solving and evaluating artistic and technological problems
  • analyzing real world entrepreneurship relevant to the field of art and technology
  • selecting and employing various methods of concept development
  • describing and motivating choice of methods in connection with the production of sketches, models and prototypes
  • identifying, describing, selecting, applying and evaluating appropriate technologies and construction methods for the production and use of art and technological artefacts
  • applying central concepts and analytical methods of art theory and aesthetics
  • application of qualitative and quantitative methods of data evaluation and analysis regarding users and spatial conditions
  • devising concrete and practical collaboration with peers and external partners in international environments
  • communicating professionally to both specialists and non-specialists through artistic projects and project reports.

Competencies

Within the field of art and technology, on completion of the BA program, students should have competencies in:

  • applying academic-analytical theories in creative processes aiming at the production of art and technology projects
  • developing and realizing artistic concepts for specific sites and/or user groups
  • collaboration with international partners 
  • constructing synergies between artistic projects and entrepreneurship
  • collaborating with professionals to solve defined problems
  • operationalizing art and technology projects in the context of social, cultural and global issues
  • identifying further learning needs and structuring learning processes in the area of art and technology.

 

 

17: Structure and Contents of the programme

STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM

The Bachelor Program in Art & Technology is a three-year study program, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits.

The duration of the BA program is six semesters (first to sixth semester). During the program the students have the opportunity of tailoring their education through elective modules representing 10 ECTS credits in total. Such modules may typically be offered by other programs or in other academic areas. In the sixth semester, students write a BA project. A period of exchange studies abroad may form part of the program, normally after successful completion of the first three semesters, and following the approval of the study board.

The program consists of modules and is structured as a problem-based and predominantly project organized study program. In the fifth semester students may choose optional modules representing 10 ECTS credits, i.e. either 10 ECTS credits or 2 x 5 ECTS credits. The Study Board reserves the right only to offer elective courses on the prerequisite that sufficient students enrol in the elective courses.

The program consists of modules and is structured as a problem-based and predominantly project organized study program. In the fifth semester students may choose optional modules representing 10 ECTS credits, i.e. either 10 ECTS credits or 2 x 5 ECTS credits.

Students may choose one or more elective modules offered by AAU or other universities representing a total of at least 5 ECTS. Such choices by students must be approved by both the Board of Studies of Art & Technology and the Board of Studies offering the activity prior to the beginning of the semester. Under all circumstances, electives/elective modules must always as a minimum represent a total of 10 ECTS.

As a whole the program is based on progression of increasing academic complexity, stretching from working with a focus on:

  1. simple and isolated artefacts in solid materials
  2. basic spatial conditions and spatial constructions
  3. construction of artefacts expressing, interpreting or creating movements
  4. principles concerning interaction between artefacts and humans
  5. artefacts with narrative qualities
  6. artefacts that focus on the relation between art and experience. In the BA project, students can to a greater extent choose their individual focus as well as their individual weighting of principles.

SEMESTER 1
In the main module of the first semester: Sculpture and Technology project work is anchored in subject matters concerning the construction of simple and isolated artefacts. The teaching is organized as a number of workshops and courses to support project work. In order to offer the students broad knowledge about the field art and technology, three separate modules are offered: Problem-Based Learning, Physical Computing I and History of Art and Technology I.

SEMESTER 2
In the main module of the second semester: Space, Art and Technology, project work concentrates on space, basic spatial conditions and the creation of places. Teaching is organized in a number of workshops and related courses supporting project work. In order to support the students in their work in a broader sense, one module is offered teaching basic programming skills:  Physical Computing II; and another module: History of Art and Technology II.

SEMESTER 3
In the main module of the third semester: Dynamic Art and Technology, project work concentrates on problems concerning development and realization of artefacts expressing or causing transitions and creating movement physically and/or psychologically. Work is organized in a number of workshops and related courses aimed at supporting project work. In order to further the students programming skills and deepen their understanding of art’s challenges and opportunities within society, separate modules are offered in Physical Computing III,  Art and Technology Concept Design, and the module Art in Context I focusing on art theory.

SEMESTER 4
In the main module in the fourth semester: Interaction Spaces in Art and Technology, the project work consists of problems and solutions concerning the creation of interactive spaces and installations with a specific user group or audience in mind. Work is organized in a number of workshops and related courses aimed at supporting project work. In order to support the students in their work in a wider sense, the module: Art in Context II  focuses on media art theory and analysis and the module: International Collaboration focuses on collaborative practice is offered.

SEMESTER 5
In the main module in the fifth semester: Narratives and Interaction, project work consists in focuses on how to create interactive narrative universes and scenic artefacts. Teaching is organized in a number of workshops and related courses aimed at supporting project work. In order to support the students in their work, a separate module Mixed Reality Technology is offered. Furthermore, module: Art-Based Research introduces art as a scientific research method. With a view to tailoring their own education i.e. in relation to subsequent MA studies – students must also choose relevant elective modules representing 5 ECTS credits. Typically, other AAU programs or other universities will offer elective modules. The study board of Art and Technology may offer the module: Multimedia Programming.

SEMESTER 6
The main module on the sixth semester: Art and Technology as Experience consists of the BA project of the program. The student work is organized in a number of workshops and related courses aimed at supporting project work.

In addition, students must complete the module: Art and Entrepreneurship. Students must also choose elective modules relevant to the field of art and technology, representing 5 ECTS credits. Typically, other AAU programs or other universities offer elective modules that will give the students the opportunity to tailor their own education i.e. in relation to subsequent MA studies. Art & Technology may offer the module: Play and Event as an elective.

Rules concerning the progress of the Bachelor’s programme
The student must participate in all first year examinations by the end of the first year of study in the Bachelor's programme, in order to be able to continue the programme. The first year of study must be passed by the end of the second year of study, in order that the student can continue his/her Bachelor's programme.
In special cases, however, there may be exemptions from the above.

 

General examination regulations

For each examination students are awarded either a mark according to the 7-point scale or a pass/fail.

Projects, theme studies etc., may be prepared in collaboration by groups of up to six students. In the examination of projects, theme studies etc., the following examination format will apply:

Examination type a)
An oral examination on the basis of an artefact produced by the students and a written text, regardless of whether this has been produced individually or in co-operation with others. If the artefact and written text has been produced in co-operation with others, students may state the responsible student for individual parts of the report. Students are examined on the basis of the entire artefact and reflective report. A grade is awarded for the artefact and the performance at the oral examination. The written text is thus only indirectly included in the evaluation.

Examination type b)
A combined written and oral examination on the basis of an artefact/product and a written text (typically report). The artefact/product is seen as a common result of the group project.
The student is examined on the basis of the entire written text and the artefact.
The oral examination is a discussion between the examiners and the group and its members. The examiner chairs the discussion by means of relevant questions addressing the group and/or individual members of the group. The examiner must ensure the individual assessment of each group member. An aggregate grade is awarded for the artefact, the written and oral performances.The assessment results in an individual grade.

Examination type c)
A written examination. If the written text has been produced in co-operation with others, it must be indicated who is responsible for each individual part. A grade is awarded for the written performance (for each student’s contribution thereto).

For written assignments which are subject to maximum limits, a page is equivalent to 2400 characters inclusive of spaces between words. The maximum number of pages applies only to the assignment proper, i.e. title page, preface, list of contents, bibliography, summary and appendices are not included in the maximum limit. Notes but not illustrations are included in the calculation of number of pages. Number of characters must be indicated either on the front page or in a preface.
The stated duration of examinations includes evaluation and communication of the examination result.

The study units on which individual tests are based are calculated as parts of a student’s year work, a student’s year work being the workload of a full-time student for one year, including holidays. A student’s annual work equals 60 ECTS credits.

Examinations for which students receive the grades Pass/Fail are not included in the calculation of the average. The average is stated on the BA diploma with one decimal.

Any re-examination will be held in accordance with the general guidelines for examination of project reports. 

In order for a student to graduate from the program, each examination must be passed with a minimum grade of 02 or a ‘Pass’ grade. A weighted average is calculated on the basis of the weight of individual examinations in terms of ECTS credits for examinations that are evaluated using the 7-point scale, i.e. the average is defined as the sum of individual grades, each multiplied by the ECTS credits of the examination in question, divided by the total ECTS credits of the examinations for which the average is calculated.

19: Additional information

20: Commencement and transitional rules

Commencement

These regulations have been recommended by the Study Board for Art & Technology and approved by the Dean. These regulations take effect from September 1st 2019 and apply to students commencing their 3rd or 5th semester on the 1st of September 2019.

The Study Board will determine when examinations will be held for the last time in accordance with the present regulations for Art & Technology and/or the Faculty of Humanities, AAU.
